At just 22, Conor Wynne took on the challenge of leasing a dairy farm, having started his farming career as an FRS relief milker at 17.
Originally from Newbridge, Co. Kildare, Conor developed an interest in agriculture from a young age. However, without a family farm to inherit, he knew he would have to carve out his own path into the industry.
Starting His Journey with FRS
At 16, Conor contacted FRS to explore opportunities in farming. A year later, while studying at agricultural college, he began relief milking for a farmer in Sallins. Through FRS, Conor gained valuable hands-on experience, working across different farms, learning new systems and building relationships with experienced farmers. These opportunities helped him develop his skills, confidence and reputation within the farming community.
From Relief Milking to Farm Leasing
When the farmer Conor had been working with began to consider retirement, he recognised an opportunity. Following two years of discussions and planning, he secured a seven-year lease on the dairy farm at just 22 years old. Now in his second year of leasing, Conor is preparing to calve 114 cows this year, a remarkable achievement for a young farmer who began without land of his own. He credits FRS with helping him gain experience, build connections and establish himself in the industry.
